ANTENATAL CARE
During pregnancy, the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, connective tissue) must adapt to a changing posture to accommodate for a growing uterus and foetus. This can cause flaring of the ribs, increased lumbar lordosis and a shift in our centre of gravity; all of which can put significant strain on the surrounding soft tissues.
Common conditions that can occur during pregnancy and which can be treated by a women’s health physiotherapist are;

-
Pelvic Girdle pain
-
Lower back pain
-
Neck and shoulder pain
-
Rib pain
-
Coccxy or tailbone pain
-
Sciatica
-
Urinary incontinence
-
Pelvic organ prolapse
-
Carpal tunnel syndrome (numbness or tingling in the hands)
While muscle aches, pains and dysfunction are not an unusual part of pregnancy, they don’t need to
be endured. An appointment with a specialist physiotherapist can help identify the issue and can
often be resolved with manual treatment, advice, modifications and strengthening or relaxing
exercises.
A mum to be preparation appointment is a good option if you wish to prepare yourself and your body as best as you can which will be tailored for the individuals particular questions and needs. Typically, the following aspects of pregnancy and birthing are reviewed;

-
Pelvic Floor education
-

-

-
Breathing and relaxation
-
